The State of Shopify Conversion
We ran 577 storefronts through the ConvertLens grader — a curated set of established DTC brands and struggling stores, plus every store a merchant linked while asking for feedback on the Shopify Community's “Store Feedback” board. 313 Shopify storefronts returned a full grade. The gap between the strong ones and the rest comes down to two checks.
The two checks that separate sellers from strugglers
Most checks fail at similar rates for everyone — app bloat and heavy pages are universal, big brands included. But two checks split cleanly along the “is this store selling?” line: stating shipping costs before checkout and showing any social proof at all. Established brands almost always pass both. Stores whose owners are asking forums why they have no sales usually fail both. Both are fixable in under an hour.
Almost nobody gets an A
The median Shopify store scores 78/100 — a C. Only 13 of 313 stores cracked 90. The difference between a C and an A is rarely the product: it's shipping clarity, visible reviews, full product galleries, and restraint with apps.
Struggling stores don't get long to fix it
Of 31 stores whose owners posted “no sales / feedback please” threads in recent months, 6 were already suspended (Shopify's “store unavailable” page) by the time we scanned, and 8 more didn't respond at all — nearly half dark within months of asking for help. The window between “something's wrong” and “store's gone” is short.
Methodology & honest limits
Scans ran 31 August – 1 September 2026 through the public ConvertLens grader: 19 pass/fail checks across Conversion (30%), Trust (25%), Speed (15%), Merchandising (15%) and SEO (15%), reading each store's public homepage and one product page, plus Google PageSpeed where available. The 577-store sample has three parts: 100 established DTC brands and 100 stores curated as likely struggling (day one), plus 377 stores pulled directly from URLs merchants posted while asking for feedback on the Shopify Community “Store Feedback” board. Limits worth knowing: checks are heuristic, not a shopper study; the sample is deliberately weighted toward stores that are struggling or asking for help, not a random market sample; stores that render entirely client-side can under-score on crawlable signals; 216 of 577 stores blocked the scan or didn't respond, and a further 48 answered but weren't running Shopify — both groups are excluded from the Shopify-specific stats above. Individual small stores are never named — scores stay private.
